As many of you know, I had an amazing opportunity to take a workshop in Italy this past May with Scott Johnson and Paul Fowler. A year ago, my dear friend Cate sent me a text: We should go to this. My initial thought: No. I can’t possibly travel halfway across the world for a workshop. The last few educational seminars and workshops I had attended had fallen short (by a mile) of my expectations, so I was hesitant to commit to something so big and so far away. But continuing education is SO important to me – it helps me to stay motivated, creative, and to push myself to do my absolute best work.

I’ve been a photographer for a long time, coming up on 18 years, and I work HARD. So, an hour later I replied: Ok, I’m in!

I went into it not really knowing what to expect, but knew that regardless, I would be able to enjoy a great trip to Italy (I’d never been to Europe!), the opportunity to photograph on some gorgeous backdrops, and a nice getaway with my husband and photog bestie. This workshop, however, far exceeded my expectations. I walked away with so many new ideas and inspired to continually push myself to the next level.

We have been so busy this summer, between vacation and trying to work with a kiddo at home, that I’ve hardly even had time to really hash through all of the images I took, so I thought I’d break down into different parts to share bits of our trip and experience! I’ll start with the first part our session in Venice. We began at sunrise at Piazza San Marco and it was nothing short of magical. If you’ve ever been to Venice, you know that cruise ships begin dropping off thousands of visitors quite early in the day. We started at 6am and there was hardly anyone else out and about, to see the square empty and so quiet was quite surreal!
